Day 5: Kagoshima – Satsumasendai

[post of Monday 13th of august 2012]

Our first stage of the journey over the mountain! We were confident that to cycle 400 metres uphill wouldn’t be too hard after having gone through the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, in Northern Spain). Indeed, the route of Santiago had been good training, but it was nothing compared to the difference in height, the hot temperature and the humidity we are facing today in Japan. Luckily, almost all day we enjoyed a nice and refreshing rain together with the wonderful landscape.

To get to Satsumasendai, where our host of today is waiting for us, we have to go through a mountainous region. To be honest, I think we spend more time pushing the bike than on it, but it was worthy. Once we get to the top of the mountain, we are surrounded by the mist, we feel we’re in Japan more than ever, everything is full of mystery, as Iker Jiménez would say.

And we finally left at one side our bikes, after the mountain we had so hardly gone through, the feeling of freedom was absolute. We started to go downhill with a bit of worry because of the heavy rain, which could have flooded the road. We reached a little snack bar, just beside a fruit shop. We stopped there attracted by a table under a gazebo, where we had a break from the rain. Then, out of nowhere, an old lady appeared with two table cloths. These people are amazing. Later on in the day, in a petrol station, we were approached by a man with two Aquarius for us while we – were exhausted by the effort of cycling and the hot temperature – were laying on the floor in front of his shop.

We go on, up and down (or only up?), on the bike and pushing it… and finally we get to Satsumasendai, where we smile all the time we spend with our new host, who makes us feel like at home. Thank you Amy, it was great!
